Lion's Camp Hickory

FITNESS, NUTRITION and WELLBEING PROGRAM

A program designed for young people 9 - 18 years of age with type 1 or 2 diabetes with a need and desire to lose weight, tone up and improve their overall health along with family members.

The Fitness, Nutrition and Wellbeing Program is designed for families caring for a child with type 1 or 2 diabetes. The program will offer the diabetic and their family the opportunity to exercise and learn about nutrition and how foods affect blood sugar or are beneficial for their health and wellbeing.

The program will be completed both at ASPEN Athletic Club in Liverpool and in the family home. The program has been designed to be completed in 2 phases, each 14 weeks long.

This is a program designed to require family involvement. By involving the family, the diabetic family gets the support of other family members critical to their wellbeing.

Type 2 diabetes used to be called "Adult Onset" diabetes but in the last several years, children as young as 3 years old have been diagnosed with it. This incidence of type 2 in children may partially be genetic but generally speaking is brought on by excess weight, diet or a sedentary lifestyle. Children with type 1 diabetes as well can find themselves carrying excess weight for myriad reasons.

The Fitness, Nutrition and Wellbeing Program has the goal of improving health through exercise and education.

Although the program is designed for the young person with diabetes, other family members must be involved throughout the entire program. In the description of the program, the diabetic child will be referred to as the Principal Participant or PP. Others in the family participating will be referred to as members.

PHASE 1
May 9 - August 9, 2013

The PP and other members will work out at ASPEN Athletic Club in Liverpool (Seneca Mall) a minimum of twice each week.

On Tuesday of each week, all PPs and members will take part in aerobic exercise known as "Conditioning Chaos" from 7:30pm to 8:30pm.

On Friday of each week PPs in the age range of 9 - 11 years old will take part in aerobic exercise ranging from Zumba, YOGA and other aerobic activity selected by the activity leader for that evening from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

PPs in the age range of 12 - 18 will take part in personal training sessions utilizing exercise equipment as deemed appropriate by the personal trainers leading the group.

PHASE 2
August 11 - November 15, 2013

The required exercise shifts out of the gym and into the home for Phase 2. Lion's Camp Hickory may loan exercise equipment such as a Wii FIT and pedometers. Other equipment may be considered at the recommendation of the PP's medical care provider. In the alternative, the PP and members might return to the gym at the subsidized rate for the Phase 2 period of 14 weeks.

Each month the family will submit an exercise log to Lion's Camp Hickory to document progress and participation.

Each family must enter a family contract.

Lion's Camp Hickory will pay the Registration fee of $39 and first month's membership fee of $17 for up to 4 members of the immediate family living in the same household, one of which is the Principal Participant and one of which is a parent. After the first month, Lion's Camp Hickory will pay one half of the monthly membership fee for the same 4 members of the same household that remain in good standing with the program. To remain in good standing, all registered members must attend 87.5% of the workout sessions (7 out 8) and the registered parent must attend the Nutrition Coaching and Food Preparation sessions.

The normal rates for ASPEN Athletic Club are $99 registration and $19 monthly. Since ASPEN believes so strongly in the fitness and wellbeing of our youth and tight bonds of family, these special rates are being made available for families in this program.
